Only this crosses the line: “3 students behind on Unit 3” “Maria — 4 missing”

If it has a name, it stays in your browser. If it’s class totals, it can go to Claude.

Two options: Offline (the default) works exactly as shown. Claude for Teachers: with district permission, a teacher using Claude for Teachers may share student information with Claude directly. Even then, no student’s name goes into its lasting notes or on anything shown to the class.

What crosses the line

Class totals (“6 strong, 3 struggling”) and content with no student data in it — a slide, a message template.

What never crosses

Names, individual grades, rosters, per-student missing-work lists (on the Offline option). The tools that handle those stay on the laptop.

Why it’s built this way

FERPA and state laws treat student records carefully, and once data passes through an AI you can’t unring that bell. So by default, it never does.

A human is always in the loop

The AI drafts; the teacher reviews and decides. There is no “send” button — nothing reaches a student without a teacher’s read.
